Weathering the Winter Like a Pro

Catalina Gonzalez Prieto

While most of their feathered friends migrate to sunny tropical "vacations" for the winter, this population of song sparrows sticks it out in North America year-round. Winter for these sparrows isn’t just about braving freezing temperatures and food shortages—it’s also about surviving in agricultural landscapes, where habitat and resources are even scarcer. Hedgerows and lines of bushes, like the one this sparrow is perched on, become lifesaving oases—like a cozy ski lodge in the wilderness—offering shelter from the cold and a chance for a meal. These little warriors are proof that tough times build tougher birds!
