Armored Dwellers of the Mudflats

Sunny Zhang

Seeing horseshoe crabs has always been a dream of mine, after knowing that they're a close relative of trilobites. That dream finally came true this November when I saw my very first wild Chinese horseshoe crab (Tachypleus tridentatus) in a coastal mudflat environment. What's super cool about horseshoe crabs is that they can flip themselves back using their tail! Sadly, this species is endangered, with overexploitation and coastal development being some of their threats. I thought that sharing this photo could be a good way to raise awareness.
