Outstanding in my field
Ruby Burns
As diverse as the intertidal zone of BC's outer coast can be, sometimes a patch gets dominated by one abundant seaweed. In this case, feather boa kelp (Egregia menziesii) coats all visible surfaces - save for one plucky Laminaria setchellii. As students carefully categorized every frond in a nearby tide pool, I was struck by this kelp standing defiantly among a competitor.
