Triantha occidentalis at Mount Shasta

Philippa Stone

Award winner

Triantha occidentalis is a carnivorous plant found across Western North America. Sticky red hairs on the stems catch insects and secrete enzymes to break down prey into essential nutrients that the plant can absorb- the tiny hairs can be seen on the right-most plant. We were thrilled to find this at Mount Shasta on such a beautiful day, having been unable to find it at the same place a year earlier.
