About

Karl Zimmermann graduated with a PhD in Environmental Engineering from UBC in spring 2024. His PhD journey began investigating the mechanisms endowing biological ion exchange drinking water filters with remarkable treatment capabilities. After bridging from laboratory learnings to supporting water projects with Indigenous community partners, Karl learned that there is more to a community’s water solution than just a technology. Pursuant a vision for water partnerships, Karl embarked on a global Tools for Water Partnerships study to learn from community leaders and NGOs worldwide about what they find leads to long-term safe drinking water. The answer? Water Partnerships!

Karl’s passion for water began as a kid canoeing the rivers of the Yukon and Northern Ontario, and continued through many sunrises spent gliding across the still morning waters in a rowing shell.
