Shoot for the Moon(wort)

Emma Menchions

The tiny fern depicted is Botrychium lanceolatum from the elusive genus commonly known as moonworts. Sighting them can be difficult due to their localized populations and diminutive stature. At around three inches in height the pictured fern is one of the taller individuals we observed. Our trip to this population in the North Cascades was first waylaid by a bike race that shut down the road our car was dangerously unsuited for. But at last, we managed to power up the mountain and capture these ferns in the late afternoon sun. – caption by Mari Wilson
